About Me

More info than you ever wanted to know!

Thanks for wandering into my little digital corner of the world. Here are the things I think make me a unique and interesting person:

  • 14 years in Communications (currently with Hockey Alberta; previously at Northern Lights College).
  • 18 years in Journalism, starting as the sports reporter at the Midland Free Press, with a stint at the Clarion in Kindersley, Saskatchewan before finishing as the Managing Editor of the Peace River Block Daily News in Dawson Creek, BC. (Interesting Note: none of these papers exist any longer.)
  • History grad from Wilfrid Laurier University, where my Bachelor's Thesis was entitled "The Americanization of Canadian College Football: A Case Study of Dave "Tuffy" Knight, WLU 1965-70".
  • 40 plus years as a softball umpire, with one national championship, where I met Walter Gretzky.
  • Have resided in four provinces (Ontario, Saskatchewan, BC and Alberta) with the various auto insurance regulations that exist in each.
  • Proud to say I grew up in Londesboro, Ontario (population 200), where we had some of the best darned road hockey players on the face of the earth.
  • I believe the pun is the highest form of humour (not only does it need to be funny, it also has to have a double meaning!)
  • There is a line from the Simpsons that is applicable to every situation in the world - no exceptions.
  • I have a favourite assortment of comic strips that I have accumulated over the years, including strips from Calvin and Hobbes ("they go farther when you make them right"), Bloom County ("mind if I blow pastrami belches in your face"), and Shoe ("Chester A, Chet the Jet Arthur....").
  • Despite everything outlined above, I am married. I met my lovely wife after writing a column lamenting that Chunky soup was biased against single people because they had fewer flavours available in the single-serve cans than in the big cans.

Stay in Touch

The main purpose of this website is to provide an online home for clippings of stories and columns that have appeared over my years as a journalist. Much of my time pre-dates newspaper websites, and I would hate for the stories told in these articles to be lost.

I may also share some thoughts on events of the day. The Lyon's Den was my column throughout my journalistic career, and it seems only fitting to bring it back on this website.

Please check back regularly and see if I have anything interesting to say.

And if you think you remember me, and just want to reach out and say hi, please do.

If you think you remember me, and you're willing to admit that in public, send me an email. I will respond, unless you're spamming me, in which case I likely won't respond.
